Books

  • Theory of high-temperature superconductivity: A traditional approach (World Scientific, Singapore; accepted)
    T. Mishonov and E. Penev

The book is designed for final year undergraduate and beginning graduate students starting research in the physics of superconductivity. From the huge explosion of high-Tc superconductivity in the last two decades in the book are selected phenomena having textbook explanation – this is why the attention is focused on the overdoped cuprates. The material is illustrated with data from crucial experiments. All theoretical derivations are sequentially presented starting from the level of physical principles explained in the standard university courses on quantum mechanics, statistical physics and electrodynamics. Significant parts of the chapters dedicated to electronic band structure, pairing by exchange interaction, thermodynamic and electrodynamic behavior, and fluctuations were presented at lectures on solid state theory, superconductivity, and quantum field theory methods in condensed matter physics. The purpose of this introductory monograph is to bridge the basic undergraduate physics texts and contemporary physics of high-Tc superconductivity.

  • High-Tc Superconductors and Related Materials
Cover Materials Science, Fundamental Properties, and Some Future Electronic Applications
NATO SCIENCE SERIES II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry: Volume 86
Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, June 2001, 568 pp. [ISBN 0-7923-6872-X]

edited by S.-L. Drechsler and T. Mishonov

A broad introduction to high Tc superconductors, their parent compounds and related novel materials, covering both fundamental questions of modern solid state physics (such as correlation effects, fluctuations, unconventional symmetry of superconducting order parameter) and applied problems related to short coherence length, grain boundaries and thin films. The information that can be derived from electron spectroscopy and optical measurements is illustrated and explained in detail. Descriptions widely employ the clear, relatively simple, phenomenological Ginzburg–Landau model of complex phenomena, such as vortex physics, vortex charge determination, plasmons in superconductors, Cooper pair mass, and wetting of surfaces. The first comprehensive reviews of several novel classes of materials are presented, including borocarbides and chain cuprates.
